How music distorts our sense of time
Music messes with our minds. For example:
- More drinks are sold in bars when the music is slow-tempo.
- Consumers spend 38 percent more time food shopping when the background music is slow.
- Shoppers think they are spending longer shopping when they are familiar with the background music in the store, but actually spend more time shopping when the music is something they've never heard before.
Mind blown? It should be. The underlying cause of music's mind control powers, is due to our sense of time, according to an essay in Nautilus. There is according to the article, two types of time: the objective time we create: clocks, smartphones and the like, and our own internal sense of it.
It's that second type of time that can be bent and twisted. Hence time can “fly” when we are occupied, or seem to stand still when we are waiting for the water in the kettle to boil.
Lose yourself 🤣
The reason for this, according to neuroscientists is certain parts of the brain to do with our perception of the world turn off, and our sensory zones turn on. You quite literally, lose yourself in time. The same effects, argue some scientists have been found when smoking marijuana.
